Construction is in progress on Diepsloot’s main taxi rank upgrade, a linear market and non-motorised transport links including to new pedestrian bridges. The project is implemented by the JDA with 26’10 as architects and urban designers.
MASTERS COURSE ON INFORMAL SETTLEMENT UPGRADING

26’10 will be continuing its collaboration with the Goethe-Institut on ‘Housing and the Informal City’. The research project is being carried forward as a course for the University of Johannesburg’s new Master’s Programme in Architecture. Students will be tasked with developing and illustrating strategies for the upgrading of an informal settlement. An exhibition of the outcomes is planned for Goethe on Main in September / October this year.
SUBWAY ARTWORK OFFICIALLY OPENED

On Sunday 20 February the 400m Subway Artwork mural was officially opened to a vibrant street parade and celebration. The artwork documents the history of the Fordsburg and Fietas communities, which the subway connects.
The artwork underwent a significant rework by artists Reg Pakari, Rookeya Gardee and Bronwyn Lace. Based mainly on historical photographs by David Goldblatt and community meetings, the artwork uses large iconic, cultural symbols from Fietas and Fordsburg's past. These include children flying kites, the historical Docrat Ruin, a local character Harry the Fat Man, pass controls etc.

SANS SOUCI PROJECT WINS BAUWELT PRIZE

We are pleased to announce that 26’10 and Lindsay Bremner have jointly won an international architecture prize for a first built work. The irony is not lost on us that, in the absence of a budget, the content (in the form of cultural events) rather than the building was delivered! The prize is awarded annually across several categories and is organised by Bauwelt, an architecture magazine based in Berlin. The Sans Souci Project received the first ‘Sonderpreis’ (special prize) in the history of the award for the level of its social and political engagement. HOUSING AND THE INFORMAL CITY

This is an ongoing project in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut, South Africa and Prof Lone Poulsen. Please visit the website www.housinginformalcity.co.za which will form a teaching resource for a Housing Unit to be taught at both UJ and Wits University in 2011.
